The Department of Anaesthesiology, Integral Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (IIMSR), Integral University organized an awareness and academic programme titled “From Prevention Till Palliative – Cancer Pain” on 11th April 2026. The programme focused on the theme “Pain Relief is a Human Right” and aimed to enhance awareness among healthcare professionals regarding the ethical, clinical, and humanitarian significance of effective pain management in cancer care.
The session emphasized that pain relief is not merely a part of medical treatment but a fundamental human right that should be accessible to every cancer patient, irrespective of the stage of illness or prognosis. The programme highlighted the prevalence and impact of cancer-related pain on the physical, emotional, and psychological well-being of patients and stressed the importance of timely and compassionate intervention.
Participants were introduced to systematic approaches for pain assessment, including the use of standardized pain scales and patient-centered evaluation techniques. The programme also provided detailed insights into pharmacological pain management strategies, such as the WHO Analgesic Ladder, along with non-pharmacological interventions including counseling, relaxation techniques, and supportive care measures.
Special emphasis was laid on addressing the common barriers to adequate pain management, including fear and misconceptions regarding opioid use, lack of awareness, and inadequate clinical training. The session further highlighted the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration in ensuring comprehensive and holistic cancer pain management.
The programme proved to be informative and impactful, enriching the knowledge and clinical understanding of participants while fostering a compassionate and patient-centric approach towards cancer care. The event reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to improving healthcare quality and promoting dignity and comfort for cancer patients through effective pain management and palliative care support.
