In compliance of the Directive of Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, the Department of Environmental Science, Integral University Lucknow conducted an ‘awareness signature campaign and rally against Single Use Plastics under Swachhata Hi Sewa-2019 program on 20th September 2019. This campaign gains much significance as we commemorate 150th birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our Nation, whose dream of attaining cleanliness can be achieved through our humble attempts.
The students and faculty of integral University enthusiastically participated in the signature campaign & rally, which was flagged off by DSW Prof. Monowar Alam Khalid after administering the oath for Swachhata. The campaign was spearheaded by UG & PG Students of Environmental Science, who prepared placards carrying effective slogans like “Plastic me nahi hai Koi shaan, mita do uska naamo nishaan’, Paryyawaran ko bachana hai, Plastic ko jad se mitana hai" and Bharat ke vikaas se ab naata Jodo, Polythene ke Prayog ko ab turant chore" etc.
Single-use plastic pollution is one of the most important environmental problems that we face today. It impacts the environment and our health and wellbeing, We human beings have contributed to this problem - knowingly and unknowingly - and we must work to reduce it and ultimately to end plastic pollution. Extrapolation of plastic waste generation data from 60 major Indian cities showed that around 25,940 tons of plastic waste per day is generated in the country. Of this, around 60 per cent gets recycled and the remaining ends up in he seas, oceans or gets piled up on lands devoid of source segregation.
The week-long awareness program culminated on 2nd October 2019 in Oath taking against single use plastic by students of Integral University conducted at Boys and Girls hostel. The program was coordinated by EVS faculty, Dr. Riyazuddeen Khan, Dr. Manaal Zahera, Dr. Mohd. Ashraf and Dr. Syed Saema.
