1. Introduction

Integral University is committed to fostering an academic environment where freedom of thought, expression, and inquiry is valued and protected. Academic freedom and integrity are fundamental to the pursuit of knowledge, the development of critical thinking, and the advancement of scholarship. This policy outlines the principles and practices that guide academic freedom and integrity at Integral University.

2. Scope

This policy applies to all members of the Integral University community, including faculty, students, researchers, and administrative staff. It covers the rights and responsibilities related to academic freedom, as well as the standards and expectations for academic integrity in all academic activities.

3. Objectives

  • To uphold the principles of academic freedom, ensuring that faculty, students, and researchers can explore, discuss, and disseminate knowledge without undue restriction.
  • To promote a culture of academic integrity, where honesty, fairness, and responsibility are central to all scholarly activities.
  • To provide guidelines for addressing breaches of academic integrity and protecting academic freedom within the University.

4. Academic Freedom

4.1 Principles of Academic Freedom

  • Freedom of Inquiry: Faculty, students, and researchers have the right to explore, investigate, and question ideas and knowledge without interference or censorship, provided they adhere to ethical standards and the law.
  • Freedom of Expression: All members of the University community are entitled to express their views, both within and outside the classroom, without fear of retaliation or disciplinary action, as long as such expression respects the rights of others and complies with the University’s policies.
  • Freedom in Teaching and Learning: Faculty members have the autonomy to determine the content, methods, and assessment of their teaching, provided they fulfil the objectives of the curriculum and adhere to the University’s educational standards. Students are encouraged to engage critically with course materials and express their perspectives in a respectful manner.

4.2 Responsibilities of Academic Freedom

  • Respect for Others: Academic freedom must be exercised with respect for the dignity, rights, and beliefs of others. Members of the University community should engage in scholarly discourse that is respectful and constructive.
  • Ethical Conduct: Academic freedom carries with it the responsibility to adhere to ethical standards in research, teaching, and learning. This includes respecting intellectual property rights, avoiding conflicts of interest, and maintaining academic integrity.
  • Compliance with Laws and Policies: While enjoying academic freedom, all members of the University must comply with applicable laws and the policies of Integral University. This includes respecting the confidentiality of sensitive information and adhering to codes of conduct.

5. Academic Integrity

5.1 Principles of Academic Integrity

  • Honesty: All academic work must be conducted honestly, with students and faculty accurately representing their contributions and avoiding any form of academic dishonesty, such as plagiarism, fabrication, or cheating.
  • Fairness: Academic assessments and evaluations must be conducted fairly, with clear criteria and without bias. Students and faculty are expected to uphold fairness in their academic work, including in grading, peer review, and collaborative activities.
  • Responsibility: Students and faculty have a responsibility to ensure that their work meets the highest standards of integrity. This includes properly citing sources, avoiding unauthorized collaboration, and reporting any instances of academic misconduct.

5.2 Violations of Academic Integrity

  • Plagiarism: The use of another’s work or ideas without proper attribution is considered plagiarism and is a serious violation of academic integrity. Students and faculty must ensure that all sources are correctly cited in their work.
  • Cheating: Any form of cheating, including unauthorized access to materials, copying during exams, or using unauthorized assistance in assignments, is strictly prohibited.
  • Fabrication: The falsification or invention of data, research results, or academic records is a violation of academic integrity and is subject to disciplinary action.
  • Collusion: Collaboration on assignments or projects that are meant to be completed individually, without explicit permission from the instructor, constitutes collusion and is a breach of academic integrity.

5.3 Consequences of Violations

  • Disciplinary Actions: Violations of academic integrity will result in disciplinary actions, which may include a warning, grade penalties, suspension, or expulsion, depending on the severity of the violation.
  • Restorative Measures: In some cases, the University may implement restorative measures, such as requiring a student to complete an academic integrity workshop or submit a revised assignment.
  • Appeal Process: Students and faculty have the right to appeal disciplinary decisions related to academic integrity violations. The appeal process will be conducted in a fair and transparent manner, in accordance with university procedures.

6. Promotion of Academic Integrity

6.1 Education and Awareness

  • Workshops and Seminars: The University will offer workshops and seminars on academic integrity for students, faculty, and staff, covering topics such as plagiarism prevention, ethical research practices, and proper citation methods.
  • Academic Integrity Pledge: All students and faculty will be required to sign an academic integrity pledge at the start of each academic year, affirming their commitment to uphold the principles of honesty, fairness, and responsibility.
  • Resources and Support: The University will provide resources, such as writing centres and online tools, to help students and faculty maintain academic integrity in their work. This includes access to plagiarism detection software and guidelines on proper citation practices.

6.2 Faculty Responsibilities

  • Role Modelling: Faculty members are expected to model academic integrity in their teaching, research, and interactions with students. This includes properly acknowledging sources, avoiding conflicts of interest, and maintaining transparency in research.
  • Guidance and Mentorship: Faculty are responsible for guiding students in understanding and upholding academic integrity, providing clear instructions on assignments, and offering support in ethical decision-making.

6.3 Student Responsibilities

  • Adherence to Policies: Students are responsible for familiarizing themselves with the University’s academic integrity policies and adhering to them in all academic activities.
  • Academic Honesty in Assessments: Students must ensure that their work is original, properly cited, and completed independently, unless group work is explicitly authorized.
  • Reporting Misconduct: Students are encouraged to report any observed violations of academic integrity to the appropriate authorities, ensuring the integrity of the academic environment.

7. Protection of Academic Freedom

7.1 Addressing Concerns

  • Grievance Procedure: Faculty, students, and researchers who believe their academic freedom has been infringed upon may file a grievance with the Academic Affairs Committee. The University will ensure a fair and timely investigation of all concerns.
  • Non-Retaliation: The University strictly prohibits retaliation against any member of the community who exercises their right to academic freedom or reports a violation of academic integrity.

7.2 Support and Resources

  • Academic Freedom Committee: An Academic Freedom Committee will be established to monitor and support the protection of academic freedom within the University. This committee will provide guidance and recommendations on issues related to academic freedom.

  • Students: Expected to adhere to the principles of academic integrity in all academic work, respect the academic freedom of others, and report any violations of these principles.
  • University Administration: Responsible for providing the necessary resources, training, and support to protect academic freedom and promote academic integrity, as well as for enforcing this policy.
  • Academic Affairs Committee: Charged with overseeing the implementation of this policy, reviewing grievances related to academic freedom and integrity, and ensuring continuous improvement in these areas.
