Welcome to IIMSR’s department of Pathology. I will present a brief overview of various activities undertaken by this department. A pathologist is a clinician, a teacher, a scholar and a researcher. This objective is attained only when a department undertakes diverse activities with core commitment to a robust teaching programme, reliable and prompt diagnostic service and socially relevant research. I emphasize that Pathology is not solely about specimens. It is about patients. Our approach to teaching - both undergraduate and post graduate students - is firmly aligned to this outlook. Our staff works as a team, for which sufficient space and freedom is provided. And this helps us in achieving our mission of serving the community.

Presently the department has ten faculty members and 26 technical and support staff. They provide hospital services in areas like histopathology, cytopathology, hematology, clinical pathology and blood banking. Many of these services are available for both in house and outside patients. Our Central lab and blood bank works round the clock.

The department is engaged in teaching 150 undergraduate medical students as per integrated competency based syllabus mandated by National Medical Commission. The institute has been granted permission to run MD course in Pathology. Presently first batch of five students is undergoing training.
Different labs in the department have an array of sophisticated equipments like fully automated hematology analyzers, HPLC system for abnormal hemoglobin, decaheaded and pentaheaded microscope, fluorescent microscope, crytostat, fully automated microtome and tissue processor, advanced grossing and tissue embedding station, digital whole slide imaging system, fully automated histology, immunohistochemistry and hematology slide stainers. Two modern laboratories equipped with binocular microscopes and other teaching aid for undergraduate students exists within the department. A museum of preserved specimens representing various human diseases and demonstration room equipped with audio-visual aids further augments the pleasurable teaching environment for the students. Departmental library and the Central library have more than 450 copies of different titles on Human Pathology. National and international Pathology journals are subscribed. Students will find sufficient opportunities to be creative and achieve their career goals.
It is our firm commitment and fervent desire to make Pathology department a place where all faculty, staff and students thrive to their full potential and feel enriched by serving others.
