Mankind have engineered several inventions but most of the inventions were not based on biology. The current platform of knowledge in bioengineering has reached to a remarkable point now and the time has arrived to convert this knowledge into fruitful and commercializable technologies. Biological engineering or bioengineering is the application of concepts and methods of biology to solve real-world problems related to the life sciences and/or the application thereof, using analytical and synthetic methodologies and also its traditional sensitivity to the cost and practicality of the solution(s) arrived at. With the availability of such vast knowledgebase developed in these several decades in the field of bioengineering have lead to the realization of its potential worldwide throughout the scientific and engineering community, hence people around the globe are starting bio-ventures based on the technologies developed till date. But still there is a long way to go on this newly laid path.
The Department of Bioengineering under the Faculty of Engineering is committed to apply biological principles to biological sciences in order to develop systems and processes that will prove to be beneficial for the society.
The faculty members are fully dedicated and committed in order to achieve this uphill task with the available state-of-art infrastructure and facilities. The department offers undergraduate and post graduate courses in engineering viz. B.Tech Biotechnology, B.Tech-M.Tech Biotechnology (Dual Degree),M.Tech Biotechnology (Full Time 2 Year Course) ,M.Tech Biotechnology ( Evening 3 Year Course) , M.Tech Bioinformatics , B.Tech Food Technology ( expected to start from Session 2014 onwards) and PhD in various areas of specialization under the Faculty of Engineering.
The Department has fully equipped research laboratories and well qualified faculty members having doctoral, post doctoral degrees in engineering and research trainings from India and abroad.The department is working in the area of genetic engineering, infectious diseases, targeted drug delivery systems, nanobiotechnology, cancer biology, molecular immunology, bioinformatics, plant biotechnology, computational and system biology, animal biotechnology, microbiological engineering, fermentation technology, mathematical modelling and simulation, bioprocess engineering and controls etc..
The faculty members and research scholars associated with the department have published more than 150 research papers in different national and international journals having high impact factor, citation index and H index. The department has the privilege of receiving research grants from various reputed national and international funding agencies like DST New Delhi, DBT, New Delhi, UGC, New Delhi, ICMR, New Delhi, UP Council of Science & Technology, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh etc. The research scholars of the department are regularly receiving fellowships from UGC MANF, DST INSPIRE, UPCST PA/RA and ICMR SRF for pursuing their research either from the department or from the national laboratories like CDRI Lucknow, NBRI Lucknow, IITR Lucknow, CIMAP Lucknow, SGPGI Lucknow, CISH Lucknow, NBFGR Lucknow, IISR Lucknow, KGMU Lucknow etc. Various MOU’s have also been signed with CISH Lucknow, IISR Lucknow, RMLIMS Lucknow, BRIATS Allahabad , AMU Aligarh, JMI New Delhi, Jamia Hamdard New Delhi, UNIMAS Malaysia, JNU New Delhi ,University of Lousiana,Monroe USA for collaborating and facilitating inter institutional research and training. The department also has the distinction of providing good placement to the students in association with CCG&D and many students qualify national level exams like GATE, CSIR-NET, UGC-NET, ICAR-NET, CAT, MAT etc.
